Wacky, Weird and Wonderful: Virginia Wedding Experiences from Unlikely Sources

Wacky, Weird and Wonderful: Virginia Wedding Experiences from Unlikely Sources

Wedding planning used to revolve around finding the perfect white dress and the color of bridesmaids dresses to match the cumberbun of the groomsmen tuxes. Flower selections and centerpieces were about as deep as we went with a “theme.”

Today, the field is wide open with brides and grooms coming up with the wackiest, weirdest and most wonderful wedding themes. From Disney themed weddings to Harry Potter themes, vintage, rockabilly, goth, and more; weddings themes have no limits!

Check out these examples of unorthodox wedding themes:

Social Media Themed Weddings

The Twiter Wedding

One couple met on Twitter so the theme of their wedding involved the blue Twitter bird incorporated into their places cards, menus, and even on their wedding cake.

The Instagram Wedding

When a couple is obsessed with Instagram and has documented through posts every bit of their romance – from the day they met to the day they got engaged – it only makes sense to have an Instagram themed wedding. This couple had a photo booth, of course, and a photographer who took selfie style photos.

Movie Themed Weddings

The Lord of the Ring Wedding

Lord of the Rings costumes were supplied to all 364 wedding guests as they entered a ballroom decorated to appear as if you just walked into an elven kingdom in Rivendell. With garlands, petals and fairy lights, guests relaxed in seats and beds that were lined in fur.

The Top Gun Wedding

When he loves Tom Cruise almost as much as you do, it’s fitting to have a Top Gun wedding. One couple had a groom who rode a motorcycle to the top of the aisle while wearing a bomber jacket and aviator sunglasses as the bride walked the aisle to the song “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.”

Supermarket Themed Weddings

The Whole Foods Wedding

One groom, who met his bride at Whole Foods, proposed at the store and their wedding took place there too, in the flower aisle.

The Trader Joes Wedding

A couple who met as cashiers at Trader Joes had their entire wedding catered with food made from Trader Joe’s food, as well as asking the pastor to wear a Trader Joe’s Hawaiian shirt as he pronounced them husband and wife.

Food Themed Weddings

The Bacon Wedding

A couple was the recipient of the prize of a wedding at Big Bite Bacon Festival in San Diego. The bride and bridesmaids walked down an aisle made of slabs of bacon as they held a bacon bouquets to meet the groom and groomsmen who all sported bacon vests.

The Taco Bell Wedding

A couple who met at Taco Bell couldn’t resist getting married there with their bouquet and boutonniere made out of sauce packets while guests dined on tacos. For dessert, the special Taco Bell Cinnabon was in order.

Travel Themed Weddings

The Delta Wedding

A couple who dated long distance often flew Delta. After separating for a while, they ended up on the same Delta flight, reigniting their romance. After getting engaged, they had a Delta themed wedding where the bride walked down a branded airline mat aisle and guests received first class amenity kits while eating dinner served on Delta flatware. For dessert, the wedding cake was rolled out on a beverage cart and guests could take pictures in front of a green screen with oxygen masks making it look like they were actually on a plane.

The Ski Bunny Wedding

A couple who met on a ski mountain got married at the peak and then skied down their favorite trail while wearing her white dress and his tux with their bridesmaids and groomsmen following suite. Even the pastor skied down to the lodge where guests waited for the wedding reception.

Photographer’s Perspective

No matter the theme, one of the most important aspects of a wedding is the photographer.  They capture the memories that will freeze your special day in a time capsule.

David Champagne is a Virginia Beach Wedding photographer who includes 10 hours of coverage that begins from when you are getting dressed and ends the very last moment of your reception. His love of wedding photography comes from creating beautiful works of art and themes that contribute to the lives of others. He enjoys meeting with the bride and groom after the wedding and  “experiencing their joy when they see their photographs.”

Pastor’s Perspective

Rev. Cory Newell is known in Hampton Roads as the Wedding Pastor and as Virginia’s #1 Wedding Officiant. Whether you’re having a religious or non-religious ceremony, and no matter the theme of your wedding, you’ll be thrilled to get the “Rev. Cory Experience.” Having a team that he trained to be the best, they follow his “guidelines for the best, most fun, and professional wedding you and your guests have ever had.”
