After a six-year run and two feature films, the HBO TV series Sex and the City definitely taught us two important keys to happiness: friendship and fashion. Whether it was the start of a new relationship or a change in careers, the foursome always made time to catch up and confide in one another. When it comes to reminiscing with friends, exchanging advice, and celebrating a new chapter in life, I thought “What better idea than to have a Sex in the City themed bridal party?” Brides, it may be uncommon to plan your own bridal shower, but there’s nothing wrong with making suggestions and requests to your planner!
With that being said, a bridal shower doesn’t have to be the traditional gathering in a living room, where everyone eats bite-sized hors d’oeuvres and watches the bride open gifts. If you’re a Sex and the City fan like me, then you know that the character Carrie Bradshaw would go for classy, yet sassy.
Carrie and the girls never stepped a foot in public without making a fashion statement−a perfect pair of heels with a cute clutch purse! Suggest that the location of your shower be in a private or reserved room in your favorite elegant restaurant. Have your planner request on the shower invitations that your guests come dressed in their finest. I found an adorable red Chanel clutch and fabulous yellow Dolce & Gabbana pumps online (that I’m positive one can find a great deal on within a department store).
Consider throwing a mini-fashion show with your guests as models, having a prize for your choice of the best dressed.
Wine tasting is another simple, yet great idea for the Sex and the City theme. Samantha, the confident and most outspoken character on the show, believed a successful party always consisted of great food and great wine. One of our vendors, Cupcake Vineyards, has dozens of exciting wine recipes on their website, perfect for occasions such as these.
What’s a party without mouth-watering cupcakes to devour? I found these delicious bites in the online portfolio of another one of our vendors, Sweets and Soirees.
After an evening of laughter, gifts, and fun-filled bridal games, end your bridal shower with a game inspired from my favorite scene of the Sex and the City Movie: “take or leave.” In this scene, engaged and indecisive Carrie Bradshaw tried on multiple outfits within the closet of her old studio apartment for her three friends, sitting outside of the closet, to approve or deny Carrie of bringing the outfits with her into the new shared home with her husband.
Brides, it would be great if your guests helped you decide which bridal gifts you should “leave” at home or “take” on your honeymoon!
