FINDING A DJ, HOWEVER, TAKES MORE THAN LISTENING TO SAMPLES ON WEB SITES AND RESEARCHING PRICE PACKAGES. IN order to find the right fit, it is helpful to see your potential DJ in action—from the wedding party announcements and first dance, to the cutting of the cake and the last dance.

This is where Choice Entertainment’s Meet the DJ Night steps in—giving brides and grooms the chance to see different DJs perform, as well as learn how to make their own wedding a memorable one.

Choice Entertainment was founded in 1989, and later purchased by Bill Gilliam, a long-time wedding professional. Gilliam created Meet the DJ Night, which is, as far as he knows, the only event like this in the country.

Meet the DJ Night begins as a mock wedding reception, giving couples the opportunity to see Choice Entertainment DJs doing what they do best.

Every aspect of the wedding is covered with several DJs performing each step, to demonstrate different ways in which it can be handled. This allows brides and grooms to pick up new ideas for their own wedding.

“Brides and grooms might see something that inspires them,” explains Gilliam who notes that one of their goals is to give brides and grooms ideas to creatively personalize their own weddings. “Customizing goes way beyond playing music.”

For Gilliam, personalizing each and every wedding is what Choice Entertainment is all about, “We are trying to educate couples on the art of creating a moment.”

The second part of the evening allows for brides and grooms to speak with the DJs individually. Once the couples have seen the DJs perform, it narrows down their search allows them to approach those who may match the personality of their wedding.

Choice Entertainment invites other select vendors to participate with small exhibits, such as wedding cakes, invitations, florists, photographers, videographers and décor/rentals. Models are also hired to wear various gowns and tuxes. Couples can select not only the DJ, but all of their wedding vendors.

Gilliam stresses that Meet the DJ Night is meant for fun and education and not a hard sell. The events are complimentary and do not obligate attendees to book one of their DJs. Contracts stay at the office—the focus is on allowing couples to look for a personality that they can trust to run their reception from start to finish.

“We want you,” says Gilliam, “to come and be a part of this party.”

The feedback has been positive, as brides have told Gilliam how much they’ve enjoyed getting to know them, as well as other vendors, in a relaxed setting.

Choice Entertainment was recognized by Wedding Wire in 2008 as the Best Source for DJs and Bands in Richmond, and picked by Richmond Magazine’s readers as Best in Richmond twice. The company is a charter member of the Richmond Bridal Association and all Choice Entertainment DJs are members in good standing with the Association of Disc Jockeys of America.

Meet the DJ Night is held approximately eight months out of the year, and takes place at a variety of reception venues and banquet facilities throughout Richmond.
